Walk-through by Michael Hirsh

Filter Brushes

This set of brushes is designed to affect underlying colour information in a Satori canvas. At the time of posting this article, (Mid May 2000) these brushes were still in beta release. Some inconsistencies of rendering might occur, especially if the brush contains a Pressure versus Size control. See each brush's Response tab for details. Download the Filter Brush set here (287kb)
The 13 brushes are named Filterbrush A through to N. Please Note: There is no Filterbrush "H", for some reason. This naming system might change in the future, so check out the Satoripaint.com and Satori Central websites. See the Links page for details.
For reference purposes, this tour of the Filter Brush set uses the Satori test card that is visible in the Satori Canvas FX browser. Download the Test Card RIR file here (213kb) In this walk-through, I've placed a white layer beneath the test card, for clarity.

I have applied a (right-handed) zig-zag stroke from top left to bottom right with each brush, as consistently as possible, to aid comparisons between the brushes.

The brush stroke used on all Filter brush examples.
The brush stroke that's used in all the brush demos. The names of the brushes, (over the black and white gradient) are unaffected by the filter brushes.

The Brush Setup Dialog Box and its 6 Tabs

Even though the filter brushes have their own presets, there is nothing to stop you customising the brushes as much as you want and saving them with other names. Walk through the tabbed dialogs, and notice what each preset does. The following six images show the Setup for Filter brush "A"

Brush Setup, Type dialog box  Brush Setup. Profile dialog box.
Click the "Use imported file" radio button to  load the brush. Here's the Profile for brush "A". The "doughnut" shape of the Profile can be altered by sliding the control boxes.
Brush Setup. Parameters dialog box. Brush Setup. Response dialog box.
The Parameters tab reveals little, but the Response tab shows the Max Pressure has been limited to 41%; Opacity is affected by Pressure, and the Application Distance of the brush is 5% of the brush size.

Brush Setup. Styles dialog box.  Brush Setup. Library dialog box.
The Styles tab reveals a combination of 48% Chalk and 48% Water with No Buildup; the Push check box is on and Limiter is set to 2. The Library tab allows you to display the Filterbrush A on the brushes menu. Remember to hit the "Apply Now" button before you start painting.
