The background paintings in Balto were
produced in either gouache or oils, with the occasional use of
acrylics. Generally speaking, gouache was used for interior scenes,
where its accuracy and sharpness were well suited to the material.
Oil paints were often chosen for the exteriors because so many
of these scenes involved painting snow. The painter could block
in a painting, laying graded mixes of paint in close proximity,
and then carefully blend these snow areas with a blender brush.
We used a special medium that dried reasonably quickly and allowed
the picture to be glazed after two days. The whole painting would
be dry enough to scan only four days after completion.
