I hadn't touched
oil paints for years before working on Balto. Despite their
tendency to produce a lot of mess if not handled carefully, I
became really keen to use them all the time. Their richness
and brilliance of colour, even in low key areas, offered me big
advantages over gouache. All the bottles in this scene were
rendered with just three colours each, so as to blend with the
digital painting of the bottle that was picked up by the doctor
from the lowest middle shelf.
The bottle
(Top left) marked "Kirk's" is a reference to Douglas
Kirk, the layout supervisor.
