This shot shows
the laboratory in Anchorage, Alaska, where the diphtheria remedy
was made up. The shot ends with a focus pull, softening the background
and emphasising the last bottle being placed in the chest, which
is on an overlay.
Disaster
struck this background after it had been painted. An accidental
water spill crept under its acetate protection cel, and "melted"
the gouache over a large area. Fortunately, I was able to
re-wet the paint using an airbrush full of water, and gently
stroke the stained areas of the picture back to their original
state. The painting took a week to paint (It was big!),
and another day to carefully restore. I most enjoyed painting
the glass shadows on the wall above the bench. The
only place where airbrush has been used to apply paint
is in the highlights on the medicine cupboard, top right.
