There are a
lot of street scenes depicting the town of Nome, Alaska in this
film and the team of ten background artists got used to painting
with a ruler, because all the houses were made of clapboard. That
makes for an awful lot of straight lines. The best brushes for
line work are "riggers", so-called because they were
the favourite for painting the rigging details on marine oil
paintings. They have a long, thin staple that makes them
good for lettering, too. Balto used nearly 800 background
paintings in all.
