Satori Tips and Tricks for Beginners

# 3 Object Lessons

By Michael Hirsh

Get to grips with the Object List

Satori is an "Object Based" painting program. This means that everything you do is recorded as a mini-instruction set that contains the appearance of each of your painting actions. If you create a Chalk brush stroke, Satori will create an object in the Object List. Make a new brush stroke, and a new object will appear in the list. Change the colour of the brush:- another new object. Geometry objects, Colour corrections,Transformations, everything is recorded here.
The advantage to this approach is that you can edit, change, copy, move or delete just about anything you do, at any time.
PLEASE NOTE: This feature is NOT like the "History List" found in some bitmap based imaging software. It's much more powerful and useful!

Let's get started.

We'll do a walk through of the Object List, using a small canvas.
Start a new canvas of 200 pixels by 150 pixels.
New Canvas  Make new canvas 200 by 150 pixels
Then make a squiggly mark with the Solid Brush set at 30 pixels, (the default)

Pick a colour from the Colour Palette  The copy will change to the new colour
pick a colour like Pure Video Green,  and your copy will change colour.

Shrink the size of the copied brush
While this edit session is still open, change the size of the brush to about one third of the original.
The new, slimmer brush stroke  Finish the edit session.
Here's how it looks in the canvas.
Right click, and press "Finish" on the pop-up menu.

New brush object in the Object List
The new brush object will appear in the Object List. Notice that it's above the original.

 Use the Rename...button
It helps to give objects sensible names in Satori, so click the "Rename..." button

 like Green Chalk Wiggle.
  and give it a...er...sensible name.

You can call it whatever you want.
When you have lots of objects in a layer, it's easy to spot the ones that you have renamed yourself. Don't rename absolutely everything, just the significant objects.

Here's the Satori Tip of the Day on the subject of the Object List

Two ways to go.

The Edit Toolbar will allow you to perform many of the functions of the Object Palette, but the Object Palette allows you to make some very subtle changes to your picture, especially when it comes to moving objects in "depth" (Z-order).
Read the Satori Reference Guide when you are ready to go into this subject in depth.
