Satori Tips and Tricks for Beginners

# 4. Screen Shortcuts

By Michael Hirsh

Actions Palette Shortcuts

There is a list of keyboard shortcuts called "Shortcut.rtf" in the root directory of your current vrsion of Satori. Print it out and slide it under the surface of your graphics tablet. You may need to edit the list to fit, unless you are using an A3 sized tablet.
Personally, I prefer to use the keyboard as little as possible, so I'm glad that there are so many clickable shortcuts scattered around Satori's various toolbars. Some of them are easier to find than others.
Focus on the Actions Palette. You will find three of the most often used shortcuts on the bottom row of buttons.

Shortcut Number 1. The Colour Palette toggle.

The Colour Rectangle displays its secret powers. 460 x 230 pixels
Press here to toggle the Colour Palette on and off.
It amazes me how long it was before I discovered this one! It's not mentioned in the Getting Started Guide, but if you have a copy of the Satori User Guide ( 520 fun-packed pages ), you will find it buried on page 157 ( or section 3.1.8.). I used to think that the Color Rectangle was only there to show the current colour. Only by accident did I click this area and see my Colour Palette disappear. Odd, I thought, try it again. It promptly re-appeared. Hmmm.... It must be happening on purpose! A quick RTFM and... YES! Previously I'd been using the keyboard shortcut F6, or Alt O, which never seemed to work 100% of the time.
This shortcut is so very useful for rapidly de-cluttering the screen. You can be sure in the knowledge that restoring the Colour Palette will be just a quick click away.

Shortcut Number 2. The Zoom Palette toggle.

This one is a lot easier to find because it has a label on it! You can use the keyboard shortcut Z to turn the Zoom Palette on and off, as well. The button is right there on screen, though, and saves you reaching over to the keyboard ( and missing the key! ).

The Zoom button with a label that tells you what it is!

Shortcut Number 3. The Add New Layer button.

The litle icon on the bottom right of the Actions Palette allows you to ( almost ) instantly create a new layer. It looks like the first stage of a diagram showing how to make a paper aeroplane. Hold the cursor over it and the tooltip that appears will reveal its true function.
Using the shortcut is easier than working the mini-menu at the top of the Layers Palette, and choosing New... especially if you have the Layers List palette turned off.

 The Add New Layer icon
 The New Layer pop-up
Just press this little icon and up pops the, er,  pop-up!
One day, in a future version of Satori, the default name suggested in the dialog box will be highlighted, so as to allow immediate text entry of your own choice of name for the new layer. ( Please ).
