The Right Type
Finding the right face in a crowded fonts folder is tricky enough, especially if you have 500 or more fonts partying in there. Fortunately, Satori gives you a quick and easy way to choose the right face. It's not immediately obvious, though, I discovered it by happy accident and then looked it up in the User Guide for confirmation. You can find it in the Notes and Tips of Section 3.2.1.12 "Text Tool" ( pages 188-9 ) Here it is:
When you want to place a Text Object in a Satori canvas, you go to Geometry in the Actions Palette.
Click the button with the T symbol.
You will see the first type face in your fonts folder in the little box above the text entry area.
Here's the Text Setup Tab. "a Papa" happens to be the first type face in my font folder. Yours may well be different.
Back to TOP Now compose the text that you want to insert, in the text entry box. You will get an outline preview on the end of your stylus or mouse.
The preview of your text. Place it, but DO NOT RENDER IT! As the caption says.... don't render it yet! There are a couple of clicks to go, and you will be able to see your text using every type face in your folder.
O.K. First you click the little drop down arrow to the right of the font name.
The alphabetical list of faces displays when you click the drop down arrow.
Back to TOP Then , and this is the trick, you click in the type face selection box to highlight the name of the first face.
The red rectangle shows where you click. Make sure that the name of the face is highlighted. Now comes the fun bit. Exactly how much fun depends on the speed of your graphics card.
Use the arrow cursor keys on your keyboard to see your text instantly update to whatever is showing in the type face selection box.
Fast Forwards
Fast Backwards The Down and Right cursor keys will whizz you forwards through the font list, and, yes, you guessed it... The Up and Left cursor keys will zip you backwards through the list. Watch out for whiplash injuries when you road test this for the first time.
Here's where I stopped the live update. When you are happy with the look of your text, finish the placement and render it. This is one of my favourite faces, called Liddie, or Lithos in some type libraries. Unfortunately it is only available as uppercase.
The highlighted box shows you the name of the selected type face.

The rendered text in its proper placement.
There are a lot of features in Satori that will make your work easier. Some of them are easier to access than others. This little trick only took me about eighteen months of daily use to find. I wonder what else is lurking down in Satori's depths.... Please let others know if you find any interesting stuff like this, especially if it is not well documented. Post your findings on one of the users forums listed in the Links page of this website.
