Painting Tutorial by Michael Hirsh

Efficient Use of Layers, the No-Mask method.

Step Three

Create a new layer, and drag it between the two existing layers, using the Layer List Palette.
In this layer, paint a soft reflected light that will be visible through the top layer cloud.

This is what your reflected light should look like.

And here it is shown in the Layer List Palette.

You may find it easier to paint the reflected light with the top layer showing.

Step Four.

Adjust the transparency slider for each of the top two layers in the Layer List Palette to create a subtle composite image.

When you are happy with it, save it.

Conclusion.

What's the point of constructing a picture this way? First of all: Efficiency. By avoiding the use of masks to composite the picture, you make savings in RAM, as well as in processing overheads.
Secondly you maintain great subtlety in compositing. Thirdly, it's fast. This painting demo took less than twenty minutes.
You can use the "Cut" button in the Geometry/Shape tab to composite "No-Mask" layers containing geometry objects.
