Tutorial : "Hacking Typography in Satori."

A Five Part, Step-by-Step guide to Creating Letterforms.

Construct the letter "A"

Step One: Create the canvas. Choose File/New, and enter 3 inches in the X and Y fields, and use a resolution of 200 dpi.
These letterforms are all square-ish in proportion, so set up a grid of 20 X 20 cells, using the Grid Constraints toolbar.

Step Two: Use Geometry > Shape tab > Irregular Polygon. Select the Filled button. This is "Looney-Tunes" style lettering, so pick a jolly yellow colour.
 
Go to the Color tab and click the Flat button. 
Step Three: Make sure Grid Snap is ON, and click round the seven points that define the outline of the A.
 
 The first ( rough ) blockout of the A's outline, ready to fill with colour.

 Back to TOP
   
Right click to Join and Render.
Step Four: Edit the filled shape to improve the proportions. You may need to come back to this step!
 

 

 Turn Grid Snap OFF, and use the vertical and horizontal constraints to fine tune the placing of the control points.
 
Raise the crossbar, and your filled outline should look something like this,
 
 Click Finish.
The next step is to punch the counter in the middle of the letter. You will find this on the next page.
